Toys & trading cards have always been a passion of mine, from the age of 13 when I opened my very first booster pack of Pokemon cards, hoping beyond all hope to get the illusive Charizard card, I was hooked. Fifteen years later I have finished school, studied at university and now work as a sales executive and my passion remained. Year after year my collection would get bigger and bigger and I would need more and more shelves to put it all on, there was only one problem! I was finding myself going from place to place looking for different things to no avail, so nearly every time I was forced to purchase online, often from overseas websites to find and get the things I wanted. I was so frustrated, I live in a city of 2 million people yet can’t find the things I wanted, I thought to myself surely there must be other people like me, collectors who love all things Pop Culture if only I could open a store then me and everyone else would have somewhere to shop. However I could not afford the start-up costs of running a store and I definitely could not afford to leave my job.
That’s where My Cube came in, it allowed me to start my business with very small start-up costs while still being able to work my full-time job all the while giving me great exposure. I started out with just one cube at My Cube Garden City, which I used to sell trading cards and within 2 weeks found myself in two cubes as it was the busy Christmas period. However once Christmas was over I still began to grow, after only 3 months of business I found myself opening more cubes in Sunnybank and Myer Centre Brisbane City. Now here I sit only four months into this exciting adventure with cubes in three stores and the ability to leave my job and focus on my passion full-time. The journey hasn’t been an easy one and it has tested me both psychically and emotionally and the strain on myself and my partner was enormous, but now only four months down the track there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I officially resigned from my job this week to focus on my, My Cube business full-time as it is now generating enough income for me to make this enormous and scary step, and as the months go on I will continue to grow and maybe one day I will get to live out my dream of having my own store.
Without My Cube I never would have been able to even begin realising this dream. The staff are fantastic and at time it is like they want your business to succeed more than you do. Their relentless passion has keep me motivated and challenged me to grow and sometimes I am scared to take that next step because of the financial risk involved but they are always there to guide and assist me through the process. My Cube has given me a platform from which to launch my business and to say I started this business on a shoe string budget would be a gross understatement. My Cube allowed me to start up with low over heads and as my needs evolved so did My Cube, now I not only get to work in an industry that has consumed my excitement and curiosity for the past 15 years but I also get to be my own boss and grow a business the way I think it should be run, with customer needs first and profits second and nothing could make me happier.
